The celebrated director Emir Kusturica was presented the Saint Sava Charter of the Serbian Educational and Cultural Society Prosvjeta Belgrade in the crypt of the Temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade.
This recognition was awarded to Kusturica for his exceptional contribution to the development of Serbian culture and art.
Prosvjeta was founded 120 years ago by Serbs in BiH, with the objective to preserve the Saint Sava tradition – language, script, church, culture and customs, and it is based on saintsavaism.
The Saint Sava Charter personifies the struggle for cultural identity, and that struggle, according to Prosvjeta, is in fact the history of our existence. The creators whose works demonstrate saintsavaist pattern include the recipient of the Charter – Emir Kusturica, a fighter for freedom and truth, an opponent of the revision of history and globalism.
– A renaissance creator in the original meaning of the word, with impressive creative energy and even more impressive results. He embodies a happy harmony of director and screenwriter, actor and musician, writer and builder – said Milimir Mučibabić, president of the society Prosvjeta in Belgrade.
Kusturica says that he is extremely happy to be in the company of Dučić and all those who formed and formatted that society, and emphasizes the importance of the idea of language and protection of identity.
– I hope that language in general as a connective tissue of the people and Cyrillic in general as an old alphabet – it survives thanks to all our efforts, including the awarding of this prize which is therefore significant and actually joins the range of decorations I have received, which confirm that I am on the right path – Kusturica added.
The ceremony in the Saint Sava Temple was attended by the Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, bishops, previous recipients of the Prosvjeta Charter, and prominent personalities of public and cultural life.
