The central event on the occasion of the Day of Serb Unity, Freedom and the National Flag was held today in Bijeljina.
The ceremony was attended by His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić, President of the Republic of Srpska Željka Cvijanović, Serb member of the BiH Presidency Milorad Dodik, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska Nedeljko Čubrilović, President of the Assembly of Serbia Vladimir Orlić, prime ministers of the Republic of Srpska and Serbia, Radovan Višković and Ana Brnabić.
The audience also included ministers in the governments of Srpska, Serbia and in the Council of Ministers, MPs, mayors and heads of municipalities, representatives of the institutions of Serbia and Republic of Srpska, representatives of Serbs from the region, numerous guests and citizens of the Republic of Srpska and Serbia.
Patriarch Porfirije said that the flag was basically a symbol of unity and a sign of the essential and profound identity of a people.
The President of the Republic of Srpska said that the Republic of Srpska and Serbia were marking jointly the Day of Serb Unity, Freedom and the National Flag for the third year, as the day of the beginning of the breakthrough of the Salonika Front, but also as a symbol of everything bequeathed deep inside the Serbian people, wherever they were.
The President of Serbia said that the historical moment required the Serbian people to unite under the flag, the Serbian tricolor.
The Serb member of the BiH Presidency said that the Serbian people had to remain firm and persistent, and fight and preserve their unity.
Dodik pointed out that Serbs had two countries today – the Republic of Srpska and Serbia.
The ceremony was held at the Kralјa Petra Prvog Karađorđevića Square in Bijeljina. Before that, the construction of the Rača-Bijeljina highway was officially started at Velika Obarska.
The governments of the Republic of Srpska and Serbia have decided to celebrate jointly the Day of Serb Unity, Freedom and the National Flag on 15 September, in memory of 15 September 1918, when the breakthrough of the Salonika Front began.
On the occasion of this holiday, the Students’ Union of the Banja Luka Faculty of Philosophy organizes a lecture on the suffering of the Serbian people in BiH during the Defensive-Patriotic War on the topic Is the history of the Serbian people in BiH repeating itself.
