One of the largest Serbian community festivals in the USA, SerbFest, has ended in Chicago. The three-day event, which has been gathering thousands of participants for decades, aimed to present Serbian culture, tradition, food and music to the wider community with whom the Serbian people share their daily lives.
SerbFest is organized traditionally at the Holy Resurrection Church in Chicago, and this year it brought together Serbs and their American friends.
The event included a cultural, artistic and entertainment program and performance, among others, by the Oko sokolovo folklore ensemble, active at the church.
– Our folklore ensemble was the only one to perform at the festival, and on each of the three days. The dancers performed a total of 18 choreographies, three of which – Dances from Bujanovac, Dances from Metohija and Dances with a gun were premieres – says Milan Andrijanić, choreographer of the Oko sokolovo folklore ensemble.
Father Dobrivoje Milunović said that SerbFest was preceded by a night of Serbian corporations. That was an opportunity to express gratitude to everyone who had helped organize this festival.
SerbFest is also an opportunity to collect contributions from the sale of Serbian specialties to invest in the programs and facilities of the Holy Resurrection Church, one of the 136 Serbian shrines in the USA. The Holy Resurrection Church has an active school, church choir, drama section and folklore ensemble Oko sokolovo.
Across the US
Serbian community festivals are organized traditionally throughout the USA, and the previous one was held in Merrillville at the St Sava Church, which has been gathering Serbs from northwestern Indiana for more than a century.
