Neither institutions, nor society, nor individuals are taking sufficient care of the beautiful Serbian language, and the irresponsible attitude towards such beauty and wealth is inexplicable, said Duško Pevulja, a professor at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Banja Luka, in Mrkonjić Grad on the occasion of Mother Language Day.

– I have no answer to the question why we do not. The vital and true care for language must be synchronized. Institutions alone cannot do it, nor can schools, or even individuals. That fight should be synchronized and each of us should take care of our language – said Pevulja.

Last night, at the Petar Kočić Cultural and Sports Center, he emphasized that language was the largest and invaluable treasure, and that 20th century Serbian literature was the greatest European literature.

– Work is needed, it is necessary to raise that awareness, that culture of speech, the so-called language culture. You cannot be cultured for a day, culture is something that is nurtured throughout life, it stems from raising the awareness that language is important, that without language there is no people – Pevulja pointed out.

He noted that there had been too much talk about the protection of the Cyrillic script, which, unfortunately, Serbs are defending from themselves, which is a bit inexplicable.

– Even after the adoption of this law on language and script protection, I do not see that the situation with the Cyrillic script has changed much in its favor – said Pevulja.

He expressed satisfaction with the attendance of this event, which included students and teachers of elementary and secondary schools.

Ivana Vođević, a seventh-grade student at the Petar Kočić Elementary School, who recited verses last night, said that the Serbian language was very important and should be preserved.

Students of the elementary schools Petar Kočić and Ivan Goran Kovačić also contributed to the celebration of the Mother Tongue Day in Mrkonjić Grad.
