The Serbian language abounds in beautiful words and should be nurtured, said Duško Pevulja, a Serbian literature professor at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Banja Luka, as a guest on the RTRS morning program.
He also spoke about the most beautiful Serbian word praskozorje (daybreak), as well as about other things related to language and script.
– Praskozorje is not the most beautiful Serbian word, only students in one survey chose that sonorous word, which has symbolic meanings. The word is beautiful, but it is almost impossible to choose the one that is the most beautiful – emphasizes Pevulja.
He points out that unfortunately, young people do not know the meaning of that word, and some have almost never heard it.
– What you and I assume to be known is unknown to them. Children today do not read, and their language is scarce. They participate in communication on social networks, and that communication is very poor. Today, our elementary school students have a problem when they encounter the language of Branko Ćopić – says Pevulja.
The professor emphasizes the need to spread awareness about the importance of the Serbian language.
– We need to fight for a better status of the Cyrillic alphabet. Cyrillic is the distinctive mark in our culture. In the last two or three decades, we have talked more about it, and we have done almost nothing – said Pevulja.
