The National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska adopted the Declaration on the Protection of National and Political Rights and the Common Future of the Serbian People.

The Declaration adopted at the Pan-Serbian Assembly held on 8 June in Belgrade notes the necessity of a Serbian national gathering and decides to hold the Assembly regularly, every two years, to discuss the most important national issues with the participation of representatives of Serbia, the Republic of Srpska and other Serbian people representatives from the region and the world.

The Declaration reads that the Pan-Serbian Assembly states that the Serbian people are a unique entity.

– Throughout history, the Serbian people have had several states with different names and claim the right to inherit their rich tradition – reads the text of the Declaration.

The Pan-Serbian Assembly emphasized that the Republic of Srpska was a unique and indivisible constitutional entity, performing independently its constitutional, legislative, executive and judicial functions in accordance with the Constitution of BiH – Annex four of the Dayton Peace Accords, whose territory could not be alienated outside the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Srpska.

The President of the Republic of Srpska, Milorad Dodik, said that this Declaration was one of the historically most important and powerful documents of the Serbian people as a whole.

– The Declaration speaks of the unity of the Serbian people, addresses all questions and anxieties from the past and gives us the strength to keep going – Dodik said.

He stated that the governments of Srpska and Serbia and other countries where Serbs could receive support, might be expected to draw up operational plans for the implementation of the Declaration.

The President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska, Nenad Stevandić, said that the Declaration was not directed against anyone, that it was based on the rights held by all peoples in the world and showed the determination of Srpska and Serbia to preserve peace.

He said that the Declaration was the foundation for being of the Serbian people.

The Prime Minister of Srpska, Radovan Višković, said that Serbs from the Republic of Srpska and Serbia were one people and that the adoption of the Declaration was a historic act for Srpska and Serbia.

The Serb member of the Presidency Željka Cvijanović pointed out that the Declaration on the Protection of National and Political Rights and the Common Future of the Serbian People was clearly balanced and made in a way to make Srpska and Serbia ready for the future.

She stated that the Declaration expressed support for preserving the Dayton Agreement.
