The minister without portfolio in the Government of the Republic of Serbia in charge of coordinating activities and measures in the field of relations with the diaspora, Đorđe Milićević, met with the Mayor of Šabac, Aleksandar Pajić, and presented him the project of organizing thematic summer camps for children from the diaspora.

This summer, more than 10,000 children from Serbia living in the diaspora are expected to participate in the camps implemented by local governments in cooperation with the Government. Milićević will present this program in the cities and municipalities of Serbia in the coming days.

Milićević said that the purpose of the camps was for youth from the diaspora to learn about their cultural and historical heritage and traditions, to improve their knowledge of the Serbian language and to make new friends who live in different parts of the world, with whom they share the same origin and identity.

‘It is very important that they get to know the interior of our entire Serbia, its culture and history, not only Belgrade or the region of their origin. That is precisely why we organize the camps in cities and municipalities throughout our beautiful country. We expect the camps to receive more than 10,000 children this year, and to be held in at least 40 local governments. Our idea is to have the camps opened this year and to have the gathered children addressed by some of our best students studying outside of Serbia, who have expressed clear intent to return to their motherland after completing their education,’ said Milićević.

Mayor Pajić thanked the Minister for starting program presentation from Mačva and announced that it would be a pleasure for Šabac to apply for the organization of a summer camp for diaspora youth. He noted the importance of such camps, which, according to him, will certainly influence children from the diaspora to wish to return to Serbia one day.
