On the occasion of the 825th anniversary of the founding of Hilandar monastery, one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers of the Serbian people, the Matica Srpska Library prepared an electronic exhibition based on material from its collections.

‘The Holy Mount or Athos is one of the most important centers of Orthodox Christianity with 20 monasteries, including Hilandar, a gem of Serbian spirituality and culture. The Treasury of Hilandar monastery preserves cultural riches of inestimable value, manuscripts and printed books, charters of rulers, various archival documents and works of art. The Library of Hilandar Monastery houses a collection of Cyrillic manuscripts from the 12th to the 19th century with about 1,000 items, a collection of Greek manuscripts with over 150 codices and filades from the 11th to the 19th century, and a collection of old Serbian printed books from the 15th to the 17th century. The Archive of Hilandar monastery preserves numerous charters of Serbian, Byzantine, Russian and other rulers and nobles, and a large number of various precious documents’, said the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia.

In addition to 17th, 18th and 19th century iconostases, which adorn the interior of the monastery buildings, Hilandar holds a large number of old Byzantine and Serbian icons from the period from the 12th to the 19th century.

Hilandar Monastery, along with the entire heritage of the Holy Mount Athos, has been included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
