The Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag – 15 September was marked throughout the Republic of Srpska and Serbia, marking also the 103rd anniversary of the breakthrough of the Salonika Front in the First World War.

The Serb member of BiH Presidency, Milorad Dodik, stated that the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag was not only a holiday of the Republic of Srpska and Serbia, but of all Serbs, wherever they lived. Also, at the central event in Belgrade, he pointed out that: ‘We in the Republic of Srpska are looking at Serbia, and we love her. We have our Republic, but our state is also Serbia.’

At the solemn celebration of this all-Serbian holiday in Belgrade, the President of Srpska, Želјka Cvijanović, wished a happy holiday before the gathered mass of people, saying: ‘I wish all our people in the Republic of Srpska, Serbia, the region and the whole world a happy Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag.’ The day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and National Flag is a great holiday that should show that the Serbian people need unity – noted the President.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, addressed the crowd of several thousand people on Sava Square in Belgrade, sending a very strong message: ‘They say – you invented a holiday. We invented the breakthrough of the Salonika front, if that is so, we also invented Stefan Nemanja. We did not! It was Stefan Nemanja who invented us. They expect us to justify ourselves to them and to apologize to them tonight and to say – please excuse us for having our flag. We will never apologize for the Serbian tricolor again, we will carry it with pride, we will carry it all over the world.’

The day the Salonika front breakthrough started was chosen as a national holiday because it is a great day in national history. It was chosen as a general Serbian holiday that will not only be related to the Republic of Srpska and Serbia, but also to all Serbs in the territory of the former Yugoslavia and abroad.
