Ilija Tufegdžić, a Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) member of the Vienna City Assembly, spoke with Marko Romić, Secretary-General to the President of the Republic of Srpska, about strengthening the ties between the diaspora and the homeland.
During the friendly meeting, Tufegdžić and Romić discussed providing support to Serb politicians in Austria to bolster political engagement of Serbs in that country.
Tufegdžić said that Serbs were underrepresented in Austrian politics and that more young people should be encouraged to join political parties.
Romić stated that the homeland would provide all necessary support to Serb politicians in Austria.
The meeting also discussed further strengthening of cooperation between the Serbian diaspora and the homeland, where Tufegdžić announced that a delegation of prominent Serbs from Austria would visit the Republic of Srpska.
According to Tufegdžić, that visit would serve as an opportunity to discuss cooperation deepening and support strengthening with Srpska’s officials in order to empower the diaspora and foster economic ties between Srpska and Austria.
Tufegdžić noted that he had entered Austrian politics precisely to work on deepening homeland ties with Austria, but, above all, with the Serbian diaspora.
He stated his goal was to make the Serbian diaspora in Austria more visible and present across all institutions, as it deserved this given its size and contribution to Austria’s development.
In this context, he recalled the agreement on the employment of Yugoslav workers in Austria, signed 60 years ago, adding that this workforce coming from Serbia had fueled a major economic boom in Austria, which had contributed to the present-day prosperity.
