On Saturday and Sunday, 16 and 17 October, first classes were held within the Serbian Language School in Malta project of the Serbian Educational and Cultural Center St. Helen of Anjous, at four locations: Victoria (Gozo), Qawra, Gzira and Birzebbuga. From now on, Serbian children throughout Malta will have the opportunity to learn about their homeland Serbia in school, with their progress monitored by the watchful eye of our dedicated teachers: Kristina Kitić, Dragana Duvnjak and Maja Marinković, and project coordinator Jelena Jablanov Maksimović.
The Director of the Directorate for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Arnaud Gouillon, wished the children and teachers successful work with the following words: ‘I wish our students, the first generation of the Serbian language supplementary school in Malta, a happy beginning of work. I am certain that you will learn many beautiful things about your homeland and that you will master the beautiful and melodious Serbian language with resolve.’ Representatives of the Serbian Educational and Cultural Center St. Helen of Anjous thanked the Directorate for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region for financial support, dedicated father Risto Gorančić, parish priest of the Maltese Serbian Orthodox Church, who provided space for the classes, and wonderful parents who recognized the importance of learning the mother tongue and registered their children in high numbers.
The Directorate for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region recently passed the Decision on co-financing the projects whose quality contributes to maintaining and strengthening the ties between the home country and diaspora, which concern Support for the establishment of new schools and classes for supplementary lessons of Serbian language in the diaspora in total amount of RSD 20,000,000. For functioning of the 4 supplementary Serbian language schools in Malta, RSD 4,800,000 has been provided.
