From Crete to the Danube is an exhibition of icons from the Sekulić Legacy opened by the Belgrade City Museum in the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki.
The Sekulić Legacy is the single largest collection of icons, numbering 48 items.
The donors, Milan and Pava Sekulić, dedicated their lives to collecting valuable works of art from various eras, made in different styles and techniques. The collection includes icons of Italo-Cretan, Russian and Serbian stylistic features.
The oldest dates back to the 15th century, while most belong to the early 19th century period.
The exhibition will be complemented with a virtual tour where visitors will be using VR glasses to walk through the City of Belgrade Museum, which houses the Sekulić Icon Collection.
The importance of this collection is immeasurable for our heritage, but it is also part of the heritage of the Balkans and the common culture of the Orthodox peoples. The exhibition aims to promote our heritage, but also to send a clear message that there is cultural commonality, especially in these regions and between our two peoples.
The exhibition will be open until 15 June 2023.
