On the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, the Assistant Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska Tanja Đaković said that the fate of the Serbian people was linked to the fate of its language and script, and that one of the priorities should be nurturing the Serbian language and Cyrillic script, as the foundation of national and cultural identity.

At the opening of the exhibition of the most beautiful Cyrillic handwritings of elementary school students from the Laktaši area held at the Veselin Masleša National Library in this city, Đaković stated that the spiritual cornerstone of a nation was its language without which it did not exist.

She noted that, given the importance of the mother language for a nation, the exhibition was a wonderful example of cooperation between the educational and cultural institutions on marking significant dates, the International Mother Language Day being one of them.

Đaković said it was today’s activity that showed that efforts were being made to develop, nurture and preserve the love for the language and script in future generations, which is necessary to preserve the identity of Serbs as a nation.

– That precisely is the official policy of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska and all Srpska’s institutions, as confirmed also by the adoption of the Law on the Protection, Preservation and Use of the Language of the Serbian People and the Cyrillic Alphabet – Đaković stated.

She recalled that Srpska’s National Assembly had adopted the text of this law in the form identical to the law adopted by the Serbian Parliament.

According to her, this is another confirmation of the shared cultural and linguistic policy of Srpska and Serbia, established already in the Charter on a Single Serbian Cultural and Spiritual Space.

She said it was very important to emphasize and constantly keep in mind that language and script were the foundation of national and cultural identity and their importance should be discussed every day.

– The mother language is a treasure we inherit in our cultural and linguistic tradition that we need to know, so that we can show it to others and pass it on to future generations – said Đaković.
