Đuro Macut, Serbian caretaker Prime Minister, spoke yesterday at the Government of Serbia with Serbian students from the region who are studying at state universities in Serbia through the Serbia for Serbs from the Region program.
At the meeting, which was also attended by His Grace Bishop Heruvim of Osijek Plain and Baranja, Macut emphasized the importance of education, both for the students and for the Serbian communities in the region.
He said that the students—mainly youth from Croatia—had the opportunity to pursue their education at universities in Serbia through the Serbia for Serbs from the Region program, receiving scholarships and accommodation in student dormitories. – This is not merely a matter of scholarships, faculties, and dormitories, but a matter of belonging, unity, support, and assistance for young compatriots on their path to success – Macut stated.
He encouraged the students to cherish their roots while remaining open to the world, and added that, as a professor who had spent his entire career with students, he knew well how much education could transform a person’s life.
Macut said that Serbia would continue to stand by its young compatriots, support them, and rejoice in every one of their successes. He thanked Bishop Heruvim for—as he noted—caring for the Serbian people, particularly the youth, in Croatia with great dedication, and for preserving our faith, traditions, and ties to the homeland.
Bishop Heruvim thanked Macut for his dedication and efforts to improve the quality of life for Serbs in Croatia, which is the purpose of this project that has enabled young people to enter Serbia’s education system as scholarship recipients. – For us Serbs living outside the borders of the homeland, education is a very important element of survival. Such projects help strengthen the Serbian community, giving it the strength and encouragement to persevere in those regions – said Bishop Heruvim.
