The exhibition tells the story of the Serbian people\u2019s suffering during the 20th century, ranging from the immense losses of the First and Second World Wars to the conflicts of the 1990s. Its purpose is to raise issues within the American public sphere that have been insufficiently discussed regarding the Serbs and were often viewed through the lens of oversimplified political interpretations of the wars in the former Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n
For Denis Boji\u0107, Director of the Republic of Srpska Memorial Center, presenting the exhibition at Congress is a significant step in the effort to secure a place for the topic of Serbian suffering within the American political and institutional landscape. \u2013 An exceptionally important step for the Republic of Srpska and for the national cause of the Serbian people. We have established very important contacts with key figures in the US administration and received a firm promise that in the coming period the issue of Serbian suffering will rank high and be presented and showed in places that befit the magnitude of our suffering \u2013 Boji\u0107 said. Boji\u0107 states that the goal is to present Serbian suffering not merely as a chapter in the history of a people, but as a topic crucial to understanding the Balkans and broader international relations.<\/p>\n
\u017deljka Cvijanovi\u0107, the Serb member of the BiH Presidency, also visited the exhibition in Washington, noting the significance of the fact that it was being presented in the US Congress. \u2013 I believe it is vitally important for such an exhibition to be hosted in the US Congress. It offers all visitors and Congress members alike the opportunity to learn more about the history and learn about the suffering of the Serbian people and about matters long shrouded in secrecy or silence, or obscured by distorted facts that concealed the extent of the sacrifices made by the Serbian people \u2013 Cvijanovi\u0107 said. Speaking about the exhibition, which spans a century of history, Cvijanovi\u0107 drew particular attention to the suffering of the Serbian people during the First and Second World Wars, while also stressing the need to further shed light on the events of the Defensive-Patriotic War and the immense sacrifices borne by the Serbian people. She described the support for the Memorial Center\u2019s operation as significant precisely because such exhibitions allow history to be viewed within a broader temporal and historical context, rather than merely through isolated events and years. \u2013 We must place matters in a wider context and recognize the magnitude of the sacrifice made and the injustice inflicted upon that sacrifice. Their mission is, therefore, to redress the injustice suffered by victims who have not received sufficient respect and recognition around the world \u2013 Cvijanovi\u0107 added.<\/p>\n
\u017deljko Damjanovi\u0107, a Serb living and working in the United States, believes that public presentation is one way to make Serbian historical experiences more accessible to the general public. \u2013 The truth that we Serbs carry with us needs to be presented publicly in a specific way. This is one way of sharing that with the world. In this instance, with the United States. We Serbs are also entitled to tell the truth openly and publicly about the suffering of the Serbian people in the former Yugoslavia. It is crucial that this is hosted in an institution of this kind. Many people pass through here, politicians working in the building, above all; the very opportunity for them to visit such an exhibition shows that there is a way to reach them \u2013 Damjanovi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n
The international digital campaign by the Republic of Srpska Memorial Center, Learn About Serbian Suffering, is being held in Washington with the support of the Republic of Srpska Ministry of European Integration and International Cooperation and the Republic of Srpska Representative Office in Washington. For Drina Vlasteli\u0107 Raji\u0107, Head of the Republic of Srpska\u2019s Washington Representation, the exhibition\u2019s significance lies precisely in the fact that Serbian history, culture, and suffering are presented to the American and international public in a place where many crucial international issues are addressed. \u2013 It is particularly significant that this exhibition is being presented in the US Congress in Washington, a city that brings together people from all over the world and where major international issues are discussed.
